Louie is a young boy who has difficulty sitting still in class.

He stares out the window, rolls on the floor and makes silly noises while his classmates sit quietly.

Louie's teacher thinks he isn't listening due to his apparent disengagement during lessons. When he is required to write a sentence using the sound of the week, Louie's teacher thinks he won't be able to complete it, as she thinks he hasn't been listening.

Louie surprises and delights his teacher, as he has been listening. He just listens differently to other children.

"When Louie Listened" touches on challenging behaviours teachers face in the classroom, the symptoms and understanding of ADHD and Autism in children, learning difficulties and disabilities, diversity and equality.

About the Author

Suzie Quartermain was writing poems and stories at a young age, winning local writing competitions in her hometown of Wangaratta in NE Victoria. She spent her teenage years living on a cattle farm at nearby Tarrawingee before going to Melbourne to study education. Suzie began teaching Kindergarten in 1997 before moving onto primary teaching in the early 2000's. Her daughter was born in 2003 and it has been just to two of them ever since. Suzie has taught children of all ages including students with many forms of learning and behavioural challenges, many with Autism and ADHD. Her own daughter was diagnosed with ADHD at 18. Her first book "When Louie Listened" is inspired by her daughter and the many students she has taught with symptoms of Autism and ADHD, whom she discovered, can learn, they just learn differently from others.
